Is it right that word computer is derived from COMPUTE?
The word Computer is derived from English word Compute, which is further derived from Latin word Computare, which means "Count, Reckon".
A misconception is spread that Compute is the base word it is Computare, which leads toward the word Computer.

In electronics a computer is a device that can collect, manipulate, process datum or data, provided that it must be able to give an out of given data. Datum or data is an instruction or set of instructions sent to a machine.

A device may not be called a computer if it
1: cannot collect data on its own
2: cannot process data
3: not able to produce output

Remember that signaling devices are not fall under definition of computer. As the input and output data must be in different states or forms, i.e., analogue to digital and vice versa. A microphone is not a computing device as it cannot process data on its own, it certainly requires an amplifying device. Amplifying device could be or could not be a computer depending whether it processes and changes the nature of data or not.
